Scoring systems and penetrating abdominal trauma
Pentrating abdominal trauma continous as a common admission occurrence in our tertiary referral unit. This research project is part of a master’s degree dissertation and looks into the scoring systems and outcomes of these patients.

A description of endo-anal surgery for neoplastic lesions in a tertiary setting
Patients present for endo-anal surgery for malignant disease, villous adenomas, and dysplastic lesions. This research project forms part of a master’s degree presentation and has been presented at conference.

Percutaneous cholecystostomy tube drainage for non-responsive acute cholecystitis
Admission patterns in our unit shows late presentation of acute calculous cholecystitis. Although most patients respond to conservative therapy and go on to uncomplicated, interval, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, a subset do not respond and are managed by percutaneous cholecystostomy tube drainage. This research project that forms part of a master’s degree dissertation looks into the outcome of this cohort.

The burden of comorbidities in acute care surgery
The main aim of this study is to quantify the burden of comorbid disease with which patients present for urgent surgical care. The secondary aims of this study are to compare the incidence of comorbidities in the age range of these patients and to compare the prevalence of comorbities between various surgical diseases.
