Recurrent Upper GI Bleeding

Recurrent Upper GI Bleeding

The Acute Care Surgery Unit is responsible for the management of all suspected acute upper GI bleeds.  In this project we aim to identify all patients initially confirmed to be bleeding from a peptic ulcer.  We will then compare the group of patients who rebleed within the first week after index endoscopy to those that do not.

The results may help us identifying those at risk.

The Elderly in Acute Care Surgery

The Elderly in Acute Care Surgery

The average life expectancy is South Africa is less than 65 years (World Bank®). A subset of our patients in Acute Care Surgery are older than 65, though.
In this research project we aim to identify the differences in perioperative parameters and outcomes comparing this cohort with a matched random selection of younger patients.
Identifying such differences may help us optimize our care for this group.
